The Regular Sales pattern comprises:
IN THE DAIRY RING 100 - 200 Rearing Calves and Stirks every Friday commencing at 11.00am.
Rearing calf numbers have continued to impress with numbers in the autumn of 2018 regularly reaching 150 - 200 each week. This weekly sale is one of the premier sales for rearing calves in the country where buyers can be assured of numbers, quality and strength. We are grateful to Genus Ltd who continue to offer vouchers for the top priced beef bred bull and heifer calves and dairy bull calves each month.
These weekly calf sales incorporate four prize shows which are held each year at Christmas; The May Fair; a special for British Blue’s in February and the Late Summer Calf Show in memory of Peter Metcalfe who worked at the Mart for fifty years.
Monthly Dairy Sales are held on the first Friday each month with Carrs Billington Agriculture offering a voucher for the top priced cow or heifer. Dairy cattle are all locally farmed commercial & pedigree stock and include a high proportion of genuine full or part dispersals.
Shows for Dairy Cattle take place in the Spring, Mid-Summer and the Christmas Show and Sale, which this year moves into December. The Special Spring Show was introduced in 2016 in memory of Coverdale dairy farmer Billy Atkinson, staunch Mart supporter and Auction Mart Director for which his family have generously donated a trophy
IN THE STORE RING
Store Cattle sales are held fortnightly when between 50 and 450 steers, heifers, suckled calves and feeding bulls are sold on Fridays at 10.30 am.
Introduced in the autumn of 2018 were prizes for the top priced group of 3 or more cattle under 14 months & 14 months & over. This will continue for the main sales in 2019.
From November to May, shows are held along with these sales when buyers can be assured of well-bred and well farmed Continental cross cattle from local suckler herds and an increasing number of Native breeds which are now finding a ready market. Many cattle from these sales go on to win major prizes at prime stock and other shows throughout the country.
The Annual Spring Spectacular for Show Potential Cattle will this year be held on Saturday 2nd March and will include the usual 40 – 50 top quality halter trained steers and heifers from surrounding dales and further afield.
Like the regular store sales, these sales produce cattle that will go on to compete with the best at the premier national shows as did Sassy Lassy, a Limousin Heifer, purchased by Jennifer Hyslop of Ayrshire at the 2016 Spring Spectacular from John Smith-Jackson of Haltwhistle in Northumberland, and was successful in winning the overall championship at the East of England Smithfield Festival in November that year when she was sold for £10,000.
Beef Breeding Cattle sales are held in conjunction with the store cattle sales with a show and sale in May.
Store lamb sales take place on Friday’s usually on a fortnightly basis from July to February when 500 – 1500 lambs are forward. These sales are made up of predominately Texel lambs with other Continental breeds, Suffolk, Mule, Masham, Swaledale and Dalesbred also on offer.
Store Lamb entries are taken to the time of sale but early entries advised for buyer’s notification. Lambs entered before 4.00pm on Thursday prior to the sale will be included in the ballot which will be drawn just before the sale starts. Late entries will follow.
Special seasonal breeding sheep sales take place during the busy September/October period when a full range of Mule, Swaledale and Continental sheep are forward together with the Annual Pedigree Teeswater sale for the Teeswater Sheep Breeders Association on Thursday 3rdOctober.
On 11th January a sale for In Lamb sheep is held providing buyers with the opportunity to purchase commercial, pure and pedigree sheep.
